CieLAROQUE was founded in 1995 by choreographer Helene Weinzierl. It is considered one of the most internationally present ensembles within the Austrian dance scene.
Since its inception, the company has stood for the continuous development of a distinctive movement language at the intersection of dance and performance. A central feature of its work is the engagement with current socio-political issues and questions. The productions are characterized by physical precision, interactive formats, and the opening up of traditional stage spaces. Its idiosyncratic movement language and highly professional performance quality have earned CieLAROQUE international recognition and numerous awards.
"For me, as a choreographer, white space is a carte blanche for my work. As soon as people begin to fill a space with their presence, it starts to breathe. It becomes charged with images, emotions, and motivations. The connection between individuals suddenly expands into a connection with everything that makes us human. While I strive to create abstract images, the individual in relation to others remains at the center of my work. This is why sociopolitical issues are of particular interest to me.
I believe it is one of the responsibilities of art to make grievances and social tensions visible within this context. In doing so, I offer the audience my perspective while leaving space for them to reflect on the underlying reasons themselves. When this reflection takes place, I know that I have used both the space and my language of movement in the most ideal way."
